DAB, (digital audio broadcast), now available for past 3 years in Europe and Asia offers direct digial quality radio broadcast (without subscription fees) to all manner of handheld, portable and home audio equipment, ala XM and Sirrius satellite receivers, but without the satellite or the fees.

Watch for HD -Radio, a similar format to start appearing in home and mobile audio equipment in the states soon.........at last, at least our ears can "see" the digital difference!
